Baroque meets avant-garde
The Dresden Blockhaus was built in 1732 near the banks of the river Elbe. But anyone looking at the listed building with its restored Baroque façade from the outside would have no ides that the complete
opposite awaits them inside: modern brutalism.
A cube of exposed concrete hovers where floors would otherwise be. It houses the extremely extensive archive of the Marzona Collection on three levels, featuring works of art, objects and documents
from the various avant-garde movements of the 20th century. The open space below serves as a spacious exhibition and event area.
A cantilevered spiral staircase leads to the surrounding, open level under the roof. Here, LED-FaMe have been installed continously in front of the ribbon windows. The apparent daylight visible through the light gap is in fact a clever illumination.
